What's the difference between debt consolidation and counseling?

Strictly speaking, debt consolidation is the process of negotiating favorable terms with creditors on your behalf.

Debt counseling, on the other hand, is advice and tips on how to get out of debt and stay out.

Most good debt consolidation companies offer some counseling as part of their program, although there are companies that do nothing but counseling for people who are currently in debt or who have had debt problems in the past and want to stay out.
